Blood donations are important and save lives, but the mass use of COVID-19 vaccines all of which are in the early clinical research stage raises questions.
Is it safe to receive a blood from a person who received the experimental medical treatment?
Can we request blood from non-vaccinated people as a safety precaution?
I decided to check what the blood donation websites of several countries say about it. What I found isn’t something you may want to hear.
You can get blood from vaccinated!
Vaccinated with the experimental product may or may not need to wait to donate blood. Deferral period is from none to several days and up to 2 months after vaccination. Sometimes the waiting period depends on the type of the COVID-19 vaccine, sometimes doesn’t. You can receive blood from a person who may have experimental medical treatment which goes into the blood and which may create harmful proteins as prions which may affect your health after many years.
Blood donations from people who participate in clinical research are unethical and illegal. All COVID vaccines are still in the clinical research stage then are we used (again) as lab rats by the governments?
Here is a brief summary about the requirements regarding blood donors with COVID-19 vaccines from some countries.
UK
“Donors may be accepted less than 7 days after the date of the most recent vaccination if vaccinated as part of the UK vaccination programme, subject to individual risk assessment.”

USA
- There is no deferral time for eligible blood donors who are vaccinated with a non-replicating inactivated or RNA-based COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by AstraZeneca, Janssen/J&J, Moderna, Novavax, or Pfizer.
- Eligible blood donors who received a live attenuated COVID-19 vaccine or do not know what type of COVID-19 vaccine they received must wait two weeks before giving blood.
*People are asked if they are vaccinated and should give detailed information about what kind of vaccine they had.

“Regarding the vaccines received, the Red Cross does not recommend any interval if the vaccine is for mRNA (Pfizer / BioNTech and Moderna, Inc.), of two weeks if it is for non-replicating vectors (AstraZeneca and Johnson and Johnson) and wait four weeks if you received a vaccine against COVID-19 but do not know if it was inactivated, RNA or live attenuated.”
Bulgaria
- After vaccination, a delay of 28 days is recommended.
- Candidate donors between the two doses of the vaccine are definitely not allowed to donate.

If your country isn’t in the list just check but I doubt it will be any different.
Again it makes vulnerable blood recipients part of an experiment they didn’t sign for. That is wrong and we should have the right to request non-vaccinated blood until there is more information about COVID-19 vaccines.

What I am doing next.
I already sent a few emails to the blood donation services in several countries requesting information if people can choose vaccinated or none vaccinated blood and if the vaccination status is kept in the blood donor files for future reference. Hopefully I will get some answers. What I will do until then to collect any available information about vaccine safety in case of blood donation.
